The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) is designed to prepare individuals desiring to expand their career in Emergency Medical Services with the ability to initiate intravenous therapy and limited pharmacology. As with the EMT Basics, Advanced graduates are employed by the area Birmingham Fire and Rescue, Private ambulance services, and able to function as a patient care technician in the hospital setting with higher pay due to the advance level of medical skills. Some graduates use the knowledge and skills they obtain to prepare them to serve their communities in Volunteers Fire Service. Program graduates are awarded a short certificate and are eligible for consideration to take the National Registry is EMT Basic Examination which is used by the State of Alabama Department of Public Health to grant an EMT-Basic license. The program is approved by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health.
